TV Mount for 24-Inch Stud Spacing: Check the Wall Plate Before Buying

TVMounty Editorial Team·· 4 min read

For studs 24 inches apart, look for an exact mount whose manufacturer permits fasteners at those verified centers on your wall. The overall metal plate width and the TV's diagonal do not answer that question. Check the usable fastening positions, required number of supports, wall construction and your TV's weight and mounting-hole pattern together.

Measure center to center

“24 inches on center” means the horizontal distance between the centers of adjacent framing members. It is not the width of an individual stud, the clear opening between two stud edges or the outside-to-outside dimension of the wall plate. Measure the actual wall: framing may vary near corners, windows, openings and repairs.

A stud-finder reading is a starting clue. It does not identify every concealed pipe, wire or structural layer. If the support cannot be reliably located and assessed, pause before making holes and ask a qualified installer to determine the wall construction. Our stud-finding guide explains the limitations of common clues.

Once the centers are established, note their positions relative to the desired screen center. Studs 24 inches apart can still be offset from the console; a suitable attachment pattern does not automatically center the television. The separate off-center-stud guide addresses that positioning problem.

Plate width is not the same as usable span

A wall plate can extend beyond its permitted slots. Measure the distance between fastener centers in the manufacturer's allowed positions, not simply the metal's outer edges. A plate wider than 24 inches may still have restrictions that prevent the required fasteners from landing on both studs. Another mount's plates may be separate pieces positioned according to its own instructions.

Compare your wall measurements with the dimensional drawing and manual for the exact SKU. Check the fastener count and where each is permitted, the plate's position, wall finish thickness, wall type, minimum stud dimensions and any required edge or spacing conditions. The screen-side VESA hole pattern is another check; it does not change the wall-side attachment rules.

Illustrative arithmetic only; this is not a real product or drilling template.

Example: two verified wood-stud centers are 24 inches apart. A hypothetical plate measures 27 inches overall, but its allowed fastening positions reach only 22 inches center to center. The outside width looks large enough; the usable span in this example does not reach both centers. This is arithmetic for a fictional plate, not a recommendation to use different holes.

Read the exact model and configuration

As one manufacturer example, ECHOGEAR's current EGLF2 product page lists compatibility with 16- to 24-inch stud spacing. Its technical drawing helps identify the wall-plate dimensions. That does not make every wall or every 24-inch configuration suitable: use the current manual and check the actual support, fasteners, wall covering, TV and product revision.

The SANUS SLT4B technical drawing, released October 2, 2025, gives a useful comparison: it shows a 34-inch overall wall plate and separate 16-inch and 24-inch center-to-center reference positions. Its installation guide describes the applicable wood-stud template and fastener requirements. Those examples do not establish a maximum spacing or permission for every wall or mounting position. Its lateral-adjustment rules also differ between wood studs and concrete. Fastener layout and TV positioning are separate checks.

If your plate does not reach

A manufacturer-approved wider mount or a compatible accessory may be available for the specific product and wall. Ask for the model and written installation instructions, including whether the accessory works with the intended TV weight and movement. Do not attach a generic metal strip or drill a new hole in the plate to make it reach.

A qualified professional can assess whether a properly designed backing solution is appropriate for the building and the exact mount. That assessment depends on its structure, access and manufacturer requirements; a board fastened to an unknown wall is not an automatic solution. Moving the screen to another suitable location or using a compatible stand may also be the right answer.

Prepare a useful fit check

Have the measured stud centers, wall construction and finish thickness, mount model/manual, TV model, weight without stand, mounting-hole pattern and intended movement ready. Ask: “Which permitted slots and fasteners in this manual will land on these two centers?” A useful answer identifies the positions on the drawing and the wall assumptions, not merely the size printed on the TV box.

Request a TV installation assessment and include the measurements and mount model. Address coverage and any travel fee are checked during booking; the requested arrival window needs confirmation.
